PyBit is a small application written in wxPython for shortening URLs using some of the best shortening engines like: bit.ly, is.gd, cli.gs and smsh.me and posting status updates to twitter or identi.ca. pyBit tries to be as simple as possible and more userfirendly. So the configuration is one using a simple preference dialog and all the buttons and text is bigger. But you have to know, that all passwords (for twitter and identi.ca) are stored in plain text, so it’s NOT secure, till I figure out a simple way to store the passwords, or twitter gives a hash authentication method.

Under GNOME pyBit stores the shotened URL directly to your clipboard, so you don’t have to select and copy the short URL.

News

(24.03.2010) pyBit version 2.2.0 stable as it supposed to be:

  • Fixed issue when saving setting without selecting an engine (default engine Issue)
  • Fixed problem with restart for applying the changes
  • All settings are dynamicly loaded - No restart needed after saving your settings
  • Fixed problem with the Clipboard - Unable to open Clibpboard

I strongly recommend to use your own username and password when using bit.ly, since bitlyapidemo is used by many others and you will get the error Message: ”You have exceeded your hourly rate limit for this method.”. This version is stable so it's recommended to upgrade. Please remove the old version before upgrading. The problem with the deb package was also fixed, since this is “all” for all architectures

* The .deb package was updated, so please remove the old version and install this one.

(13.02.2010) pyBit version 2.1.3 stable as it supposed to be:

  • Fixed issue with bit.ly authentication and error handling
  • Fixed bug while saving your setting (wrong value for the engine if not changed)

I strongly recommend to use your own username and password when using bit.ly, since bitlyapidemo is used by many others and you will get the error Message: ”You have exceeded your hourly rate limit for this method.”. This version is pretty stable so it's recommended to upgrade. Please remove the old version before upgrading.

(06.02.2010) pyBit version 2.1.1 going to the next level:

  • Removed dependency of gtk - now everything is wxPython
  • Added exit confirmation dialog
  • Added Error message, when the shortening with bit.ly gives an error (mostly because of the bitlyapidemo, so please use your own username and API_KEY)

There are many new features and improvements planed for the next major release 3.0, one of them is the dynamic work with the configuration, and the other is a database for storing all the urls you have shorted, so there are some thoughts about new dialog where you will be able to select a shorted URL and then copy it directly to the clipboard, but I still can't figure out how to make it more easy to use (I'm open for suggestions).
